The European Union has taken note with great satisfaction of the Agreement reached on 26 October 1998 in Brasilia between the Republics of Peru and Ecuador, who have thereby settled their long-standing differences.

The European Union commends both President Jamil Mahuad of Ecuador and President Alberto Fujimori of Peru on their personal efforts in bringing the negotiations to a successful conclusion and pays its respects to the Congresses and the peoples of the two countries for their contributions to the final settlement.

The European Union also commends the guarantor States Argentina, Brazil, Chile and the United States for the role they played in facilitating the negotiation process.

The European Union is convinced that this Agreement will contribute to peace and security in the region and to the well-being of its peoples.

The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the European Union, the associated country Cyprus and the EFTA countries members of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this declaration.
