EU-Canada Summit - Niagara-on-the-Lake, 19 June 2005
The EU-Canada Summit will take place on June 19 in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada. The EU and Canada are strategic partners. We see eye to eye on many issues and are committed to translate this agreement into common action. Leaders will try to move our common agenda forward, notably on UN reform, climate change, crisis management, and Sudan/Darfour, to name but a few of the issues covered. Economic relations will play a prominent role during the trade ministers' meeting.
EU-Canada relations have moved forward on several issues last year: Canada is very supportive of ESDP and participates in many of the EU's crisis management operations, such as ALTHEA. The conclusion of negotiations on a Framework for Canadian Participation in such missions just before the summit is a major achievement. We also concluded negotiations on an agreement about the transfer of Passenger Name Records, PNR, which is important in the fight against terrorism.
The summit will adopt a comprehensive declaration setting out common goals and priorities.
