EU Special Representatives
The European Union Special Representatives (EUSRs) support the work of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in troubled countries and regions. They play an important role in:
- providing the EU with an active political presence in key countries and regions, acting as a “voice” and “face” for the EU and its policies,
- developing a stronger and more effective EU Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP),
- the EU's efforts to become a more effective and more coherent actor on the world stage.
Currently, there are ten EUSRs working on issues related to Afghanistan, the African Union, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Central Asia, the Horn of Africa, Kosovo, the Middle East Peace Process, the South Caucasus and Georgia, the Southern Mediterranean region as well as Sudan and South Sudan. They promote the EU's policies and interests in these areas and actively contribute to efforts to consolidate peace, stability and the rule of law.
The EUSRs are appointed by the Council on a recommendation of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
