Turkey obtained candidate status following the Helsinki European Council of December 1999. The European Council of 16/17 December 2004 decided that Turkey sufficiently fulfils the Copenhagen political criteria to open accession negotiations.

Accession negotiations were launched in an Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) on 3 October 2005. The Council also agreed on a framework for negotiations with Turkey on 3 October 2005.

The Council adopted on 18 February 2008 the revised Accession Partnership with Turkey.

Since the start of accession negotiations in October 2005, out of 35 negotiating chapters, 13 chapters have been opened and of these 1 has been provisionally closed.

The last meeting of the Accession Conference was held on 30 June 2010.

The 50th EU-Turkey Association Council was held in Brussels on 22 June 2012 to review EU-Turkey relations, the accession process and the implementation of the Association Agreement.
