The Council also sent a message to the Egyptian population, urging the authorities to embark on an orderly transition towards free and fair democratic elections.
After the meeting, the High Representative Catherine Ashton expressed member states'"admiration for the courage and determination shown by the Tunisian people in their struggle for democracy". She also declared: "We want to help them to move forward, using our core values, building the institutions, supporting the move through to elections, moving forward in a way that Tunisia wants to move forward."
If requested, the EU will assist with the organisation of presidential and parliamentary elections. It was also decided to freeze all assets embezzled by the former president and his family.
The Council welcomed the creation of three commissions to deal with political reform and investigate acts of violence during the demonstrations and corruption.
In her talks with the newly appointed Tunisian Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Ahmed Ounaies, Catherine Ashton "underscored the need to help and empower the civil society".
The European Union intends to update its strategy and its assistance to Tunisia and reinforce economic relations with the country.
