What is the role of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy?

The High Representative conducts the Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy and represents the Union in that area. The position is held by Catherine Ashton.

She heads the European External Action Service and exercises authority over EU delegations in third countries and at international organisations.

She chairs the Foreign Affairs Council and is one of the Vice-Presidents of the Commission.
