What is the role of the President of the European Council?
The President of the European Council
- convenes and chairs meetings of the European Council and drives work forward
- ensures the preparation and continuity of the work of the European Council
- facilitates cohesion and consensus among the members of the European Council
- represents the EU to the outside world (without prejudice to the powers of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy).
The Presidency of the European Council is a full-time job; the President may not simultaneously hold a national office.
The President's term of office is two and a half years, renewable once.
